A Baking Weekend

Today is Monday, September 13, 2010. The rains have returned. The thunder roarer and the lightening cracked, it rained buckets. We only lost power once and it was very brief. We are supposed to have storms all week in the afternoons.

The weekend was a productive one. Made the jam and fillings, baked the starter bread and made some cinnamon rolls. I will say the starter bread is a good one and very inexpensive. I will be able to get six loaves of bread every three to five days, depending on how often you want to bake. The girls are all laying now so we are getting an average of at least four eggs a day. Once we are ahead on eggs, I can start freezing them. My plan is to do make more fillings and apple butter next weekend.

Didn't work on shop things at all this weekend and that's okay, I didn't feel the need to. So I have a few things I will start this week and plan is to finish them as well. Since George is working six days, this gives me an extra day to get things done. Tuesday will be another baking day, both starter breads will need to be baked. Will make chocolate chip muffins with one and six loaves of bread with the other one.

The temperatures are still in the 90's, supposed to be a high of 88 on Friday this would be wonderful to think the temperatures will start coming down. I miss the house being opened up and the fresh air blowing through.

The laundry is going, need to get it out and dry before the storms roll in. After young son gets his school work finished going to go see mama. Haven't seen her since the day she brought her friend over. With football season going, we don't dare show up then. She lives for football! I myself can live without it.

Remember yesterday, dream about tomorrow, but live today. ~Brightest Blessings~

  1. -chuckle- That is so cute. Your mama "lives" for football! No, I don't share her "addiction," but I love it, when we older folk, are kind of "addicted" to something. Seems good for us. :-) [Guess my "addiction" is YA books, on the para-normal [?]. Mmmm, on ghosts, vampires, Faeries, shades, etc., etc. Not sure how one lumps them, together, with a term, though.]

Wow, you did goooood with your weekend of baking! Even though you still have hot weather. It took our weather cooling off, to get me to bake. I'm a wimp. :-)

Love the sound of the breads and rolls, etc. But I'm gluten intolerant and have to deal with that [kind-of-new] issue. I'm trying stuff and eliminating the things that 'don't work,' though.

    Wishing you a good week.

  2. Mmmmm, do I explain something? Well, might as well try.

My blog name ["Aunt Amelia's Attic] sounds like a typical older gal. Bakes Apples pies, 73 years old, married over 50 years, with kids and grands. Tries for Simplicity. Etc. Sounds like typical sweet Christian Grandma, right?

    -hehhhhhhhhhhh-

    Wrong!!!

I suffered through 63 years of being a born & bred Catholic. In 2000, I finally gave myself permission to question and think for myself. Years of reading/thinking later, I came out on the side of being an Agnostic.

I want Freedom for myself. And for all religions. Except the one which wants to convert me, by the sword.

I have fought with bloggers, who "spook" at anything Pagan. I have known lovely Pagans, as well as lovely Christians, and not so lovely Christians. I HATE being told that I'm gonna' burn in hell, because I don't believe as "they" believe. Etc.

In other words, I gravitate quicker, to a Pagan sounding blog, than to a heavy Christian sounding blog. More to the point, I am NOT a typical older Granny! But, since I enjoy life in what I call "Pretty Blog Land," I do interact with more Christian gals. [Until they make me gag, that is. lol.] "Aunt Amelia's Attic" makes 'em think I'm kind-of one of them. >,-)

May we all be free, to choose our own Path!!!

Hope it wasn't weird, for me to explain all this, here. Hope...

  4. One day I hope to have a house to where I can have chickens. There is a house down the road, where the yard is ruled by the chickens. Oh how I wish I could bake. Kudos to you!

  5. I love starter bread.. esp. in the cooler months... Has been a while since I have had one going on my counter... May just have to start one up. some women I know if the town I grew up in have had one going for over 30 years. Can you beleive it... I usually try and get a starter off of them as I just like the nostalgia of it all. Hope you don't get too wet this week

  7. Fall seems to invite baking, no matter what the temps. .and comfort food! My nesting culinary genes are starting to stir too, and am going to be trying some different preserving recipes, just for the fun and challenge. .if we lived closer, we could be experimenting together. .now whether the neighbors would think that is a good thing will be left up to debate! lol
Thanks for sharing the photos of your treats. .they make my mouth water!!

  8. Wow - I can't believe you are still getting weather in the 90's! I'll try to send you some cool breezes (without all the storms!)

Football isn't my thing either - but I love our local hockey team about as much as some people love football - so I don't make fun of it too much.

All that baking sounds wonderful - and you are even doing it in the hot weather! Try to get a day off for yourself somewhere Dede!
